Biological Science

Biomedical technicians work in a hospital or laboratory and are responsible for keeping all biomedical equipment in good working order. Their duties include installing and maintaining biomedical equipment, preparing equipment performance reports, and instructing personnel in the care and use of equipment.

Chemical technicians assist chemists and engineers with chemical processing and testing. They may work in labs or manufacturing plants, conducting experiments, testing compounds, and analyzing substances and data. Chemical technicians also write reports and troubleshoot equipment.

Collect and prepare samples in accordance with established procedures. Test food, food additives, and food containers to ensure that they comply with established safety standards. Help food scientists with food research, development, and quality control.

The Geneticist will research and study the inheritance of traits at the molecular, organism or population level and may evaluate or treat patients with genetic disorders.

A histologist, also referred to as a histology technician or histotechnician, prepares tissue samples for a pathologist to study. As a histologist, you are specially trained to cut samples from organs or other pieces of tissue and stain them with materials such as dyes, which can aid in microscopic tissue analysis.

Laboratory managers plan, organise, direct and coordinate a range of activities in the lab. They perform administrative duties, supervise and assist other staff members, oversee tests and experiments and present the results to clients, and ensure that all tests and projects are completed on time.

Chemical analysts collect information about the composition of chemical substances, and process and communicate this information through the principles of science, engineering and mathematics. 

Cytotechnologists are lab professionals who evaluate patients' cell samples and are trained to notice subtle changes to accurately detect precancerous, malignant, and infectious conditions. Cytotechnologists usually work closely with a pathologist.

The forensic pathologist is a subspecialist in pathology whose area of special competence is the examination of persons who die suddenly, unexpectedly or violently. The forensic pathologist is an expert in determining cause and manner of death.

Hematologists are medical practitioners who specialize in treating conditions of the blood. Their primary responsibilities include testing and diagnosing patients, treating diseases such as anemia or hemophilia and prescribing medications or dietary advice.

An immunohematologist is a lab technician who performs tests related to blood transfusions to confirm that blood is safe for transfusion into a patient. These technicians are familiar with the interplay between antigens and antibodies that can make a transfusion unsafe.

A medical scientist is someone who works to try to gain a better understanding of human anatomical processes, diseases, and related biological research. Universities, pharmaceutical and biomedical companies, and research hospitals may employ medical scientists.
